We are very pleased to welcome our visiting doctoral scholar from Brazil for the 2019 Fall Semester, Renan Paiva Chaves.
Renan is a researcher supported by São Paulo Research Foundation (Fapesp) and a member of the Research Center for Documentary Film (CEPECIDOC) and of the Research Group in Music and Sound Design Applied to Dramaturgy and Audiovisual at University of Campinas (Unicamp), in São Paulo, Brazil. He is a Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Cinema at Unicamp and holds a bachelor’s degree of music with honors from Unicamp and a master’s degree in film studies from Unicamp. He has conducted research on sound and music in documentary film since 2010, and his current research efforts are in search of a history and theory of documentary film sound, which is mainly based on analyses of both audiovisual and textual primary sources. During 2010 he was visiting student at National University of the Littoral (UNL), in Santa Fe, Argentina, and during 2017-2018 he was visiting researcher at Monash University, in Melbourne, Australia, where he developed part of his current research.
